NHPC has initiated wet commissioning of the third generating unit at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking a significant step toward completing India's largest hydropower project.
Unit 3, with a capacity of 250 MW, has successfully passed mechanical checks under water and is now undergoing real operating condition tests. Wet commissioning involves allowing water to pass through the turbine to verify its performance, safety, and reliability before connecting it to the national grid. The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, located on the Assam-Arunachal border, has a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW and is being developed as a run-of-river scheme. The first unit has been commissioned, and trial operations for the second unit are complete. Additional units will be gradually brought online to stabilise power generation.
NHPC officials called this milestone a critical achievement for the company and the hydropower sector, with plans to contribute significantly to renewable energy and national energy security.
