NTPC has sought approval of the Supreme Court for its hydel-based power plant in Uttarakhand.
The company wants to go ahead with construction of its power plant, with 171 MW capacity, which was stayed along with 23 other hydro projects by the Supreme Court after last year’s natural disaster in the state.
In August 2013, the court had prohibited setting up of any new hydroelectric power projects in the state and directed the Centre to constitute an expert body to study environmental degradation caused by such projects. The court had also directed the Ministry of Environment & Forests, and the government of Uttarakhand not to grant any further environmental or forest clearances for any hydroelectric power project until further orders.
