Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) is likely to invite bids in November 2009 from
contractors for the supply of passenger cars.
The scope of work covers design, manufacture, supply, testing and
commissioning of the electric multiple units (EMUs) and the training of
personnel on the operation and maintenance of the EMUs. CMRL expects to have 42
train sets of four-car configuration, a total of 168 coaches. Each four-car
train set will have two motor coaches and two trailer coaches with flexibility
to convert to a 6-car rake.
CMRL is implementing the 45-km Chennai metro project, consisting of two
inter-connected lines linking North Chennai to the airport to the south and the
Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount. The project entails an estimated investment
of Rs 14,600 crore. Japan International Cooperation Agency is funding 60 per
cent of the cost through a loan and the balance is shared by the State and the
Union governments.
