The Australia Government on 10 October 2012 gave a go-ahead to the GVK Group’s proposed coal terminal at a port that forms part of the Alpha coal project in Queensland state.
GVK is also building a 495-km rail line and a 60-million tpa port at Abbot Point near Bowen as part of the pit-to-port logistics solution with a total investment outlay of $10 billion (approx Rs 51,000 crore).
In August 2012, GVK had received the Federal Government’s environmental clearance for Alpha Mine and rail project. The Alpha project has a mine life of more than 30 years, and would produce 32 million tpa. The first coal is expected to be produced in 2016.
The Group is reportedly the only coal developer in Australia to possess environmental approvals at a state and federal level that integrate the mine, rail and port. It brings to finalisation the tier I environmental approvals that will significantly assist in the facilitation of opening up of the Galilee Basin.
