Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a major power transmission project by Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) on 27 July, 2025, in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. The project aims to evacuate 2,000 MW (2 GW) of nuclear power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2x1000 MW) under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).

The scheme, being executed by POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission, includes the construction of a 400 kV double-circuit (quad) transmission line from Kudankulam to Tuticorin-II GIS Power Station, along with two 400 kV GIS Line Terminal bays at Tuticorin-II GIS. The project will enable clean, sustainable power delivery to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry, addressing regional energy demands and supporting India’s broader goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

Present at the ceremony were Governor RN Ravi, Union Ministers Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Dr. L. Murugan, state ministers, and senior government officials. As of June 30, 2025, POWERGRID operates 284 substations, over 1,80,533 ckm of transmission lines, and 5,66,831 MVA of transformation capacity, with system availability exceeding 99.84 percent.
