Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (PVUNL) has initiated coal mining operations in Latehar district, Jharkhand, after taking possession of 5.35 acres of land.
This step aims to secure a steady coal supply for the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project (STPP), reducing reliance on external sources. PVUNL officials emphasized that the new coal source will ensure consistent power generation, especially as the thermal power plant’s first 800 MW unit is now contributing to the state’s grid. The decision to begin mining coincides with rising power demand in the region, where the captive coal will help stabilise fuel availability and improve long-term operational security.
The Latehar coal block is considered a strategic asset, as it will lower logistics costs, prevent supply disruptions, and ensure a continuous fuel flow. PVUNL has obtained necessary permissions and is focused on ramping up extraction while complying with safety and environmental regulations. Stakeholders are optimistic about the plant’s future power output.
