Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has put forward a proposal to the railway minister and the chief minister for extension of Harbour line services upto Virar, on the western suburbs.
MRVC is already working on the extension of the corridor upto Goregaon. It was expected to be completed by May 2014, but has been delayed because a small portion of land has not yet been handed over to MRVC. It is now expected to be ready before the start of the monsoon.
If the Andheri-Virar extension is not acceptable, then the railway ministry can also consider an independent corridor between Andheri-Virar. Presently, Harbour line services are operated between CST-Andheri and CST-Panvel.
Meanwhile, MRVC is expanding nine-car trains to 12-car ones on the Harbour line. It is expected to be completed in a year.
