The Indian Railways will soon float
tenders for appointing consultants for the modernisation of railway stations at
the four major metros. The consultant who would be responsible for the detailed
project report will be finalized by April 2007. The consultant will also advise
on the design, layout and investment for the project.
The work will start from the Delhi
railway station. The project will entail an initial
investment of Rs.500 crore has been chalked out. Northern Railways will be given
the responsibility to carry out the task. The railways is estimated to require
larger amount to carry out modernisation, estimated to be around Rs.16,000 crore
for all four stations.
A special purpose
vehicle might be floated for the project later. The public-private-partnership
route is likely to be used for construction of elevated platforms, multi storied
terminals, equipment upgradation and setting up of metro stations.
