Tata Power through its wholly owned subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power (CGPL) has announced synchronization of 800 MW sized Unit III of Mundra ultra mega power project (UMPP) in Gujarat.

With this, the total power generation capacity of Tata Power stands at 6,899 MW. The company had commissioned Unit I of Mundra UMPP in March 2012 and Unit II in July 2012. With the synchronization of Unit III, the thermal power generation capacity of Tata Power stands at 6,047 MW and the generation through clean sources such as hydro, wind and solar stands at 852 MW. CGPL is a SPV formed for setting up and operating the 4,000-MW Mundra UMPP.

The 4,000-MW Mundra UMPPs is the first of the UMPPs that heralds the entry of 800 MW supercritical boiler technology in India, which is environment friendly and efficient. This technology and the choice of unit sizes helps save fuel for the project and cut down greenhouse gas emissions up to 15 per cent compared with a sub-critical coal-fired power stations. In addition, the choice of coal significantly lowers sulphur emissions to virtually insignificant levels, the company said in a statement. This project will use 1.7 million tonne of less coal per annum, while generating the same quantum of power.
