On 9 January 2014, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) granted environment clearance to Teesta Hydel Power Project, Stage-IV, in Sanklang village near Mangan in North Sikkim district of Sikkim.
Teesta Hydel Power Project, Stage-IV, has been undertaken by NHPC on BOO basis. The project is estimated to cost Rs 3,703 crore and is expected to be completed in 74 months.
The project, with 4 x 130 MW is based on run-of-the-river-scheme. It involves construction of a 65 mtr high concrete gravity dam across Teesta river in the downstream confluence of Runchu with Teesta for generation of 520 MW hydropower.
The project will spread over 324 ha of land. Out of 324 ha, 143.49 ha is forest land (including 31.5 ha river bed and 14.40 ha for underground works), and 180.58 ha is private land.
Also, an underground powerhouse is proposed to come up near Phedang village on the right bank of the river with four units of 130 MW each.
