On 30 January 2014, a trial run was conducted on a ramp that connects Koyambedu depot to the elevated Koyambedu-St Thomas Mount line of the Chennai Metro Rail Corridor project in Chennai.
The trial run was conducted by the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL). As part of the trial run, the train was driven from the depot to the ramp, back and forth a few times.
The tracks and electrical overhead cable have been installed upto Ashok Nagar on the elevated Koyambedu - St Thomas Mount line.
The trial run was expected to be conducted in early January but was postponed because the stations and lines were not ready.
Work on the Washermenpet to Tiruvotiyur corridor will commence after the Union government gives clearance to the stretch.
Apart from this, CMRL has invited tenders after ending the contract with Consolidated Construction Consortium (CCCL), due to delay in construction of railway stations on the elevated stretch from Koyambedu to St Thomas Mount.
The bidder will be finalised by the end of February 2014. The deadline set for commissioning of the elevated stretch from Koyambedu to St Thomas Mount by CMRL is June-July 2014.
Chennai Metro Rail corridor project is estimated to cost Rs 14,600 crore and will run across a 45 km stretch.
It will have two corridors - one linking Washermenpet to Airport, and the other, Chennai Central to St Thomas Mount.
