The state government cleared two metro rail projects at an estimated cost of Rs 45,000 crore, on Thursday. This will give a major boost to the Mumbai transport infrastructure.
Work on the two metro lines is expected to be completed in six to seven years. The western corridor (DCBM) will link Dahisar and Mankhurd via Charkop and Bandra, and the eastern route (WGTK) will connect Wadala and Kasarvadavali through Ghatkopar and Thane.
The 40 km DCBM Metro Corridor will be entirely underground with 36 stations and will cost Rs 25,605 crore, while the 32 km long WGTK Metro Corridor will have 24 underground and six elevated stations which will require an investment of Rs 19,097 crore.
MMRC plans to raise loans of about 50 per cent of the cost from the international finance agencies for the two projects. The remaining funding will be from the central government (20 per cent) and the state government and MMRDA will provide 30 per cent.
The authority approved four flyovers and a road to unclog traffic jams at the BKC-Kalanagar junction, at an estimated cost of Rs 227 crore.
