The expansion of Umroi Airport's runway is expected to be completed by 2027, and will enable larger aircraft like the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 to operate regularly.
The state government has acquired 11 acres of land, with Rs 500 crore allocated by the Centre for the project. Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar stated, “The runway extension at Umroi will be ready by 2027.” The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is currently evaluating the tender process, with a joint inspection soon to take place. The final award of the work will depend on AAI’s technical evaluation, which is still ongoing.
The government has finalised the additional land needed for the expansion, a critical step in ensuring the project moves forward smoothly. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is also coordinating with the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for the development of both Shillong and Baljek airports.
