Unit-I of the nuclear-based power project, having a capacity of 1,000 MW, located at Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, has reached 90 per cent of its maximum capacity.
On 5 May 2014, Unit-I of the project, undertaken by Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), generated 900 MW, which is close to its maximum capacity of 1,000 MW.
NPCIL is expecting Unit-I to reach its maximum capacity very soon.
On 1 May 2014, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) had given its approval to raise the unit's capacity from 750 MW to 900 MW.
On the other hand, Unit-II of the project is also reaching criticality, as the NPCIL will conduct the mandatory hot conditioning tests, which is expected by June 2014. If the test goes well, the reactor is expected to be ready for fuel loading by July-August 2014.
Unit-II of the project is likely to attain criticality in November or December 2014.
