Stage-II of the Uri hydel power project of NHPC at Baramula, in Jammu & Kashmir, has commenced commercial operations, with commissioning of the project by Alstom.
The project, with 240 MW (4 x 60 MW) capacity, has begun operations after availability of full water for running all the four units of the project. NHPC has invested Rs 1,800 crore in the project.
In 2007, NHPC had awarded the contract to Alstom. The scope of work was turnkey execution of the electro-mechanical package comprising hydro turbines, generators and auxiliaries.
The 240 MW hydropower project aims to use downstream water discharge of 480 MW Uri-I (already running) hydro project for power generation. It will also provide additional stability to the northern transmission grid.
