The Centre has approved the proposal of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority's proposed metro rail project in Guwahati.
The project, estimated to cost Rs 14,000 crore, has already received Rs 25 crore from the Centre for carrying out the feasibility study. The centre and the state government will jointly finance the project.
The state government will have 50 per cent stake in the project. As a thumb rule, the cost of construction of one km of underground metro track is Rs 300 crore while that of an overhead track is about Rs 200 crore per km.
The project will be executed in the following three phases:
-
Phase-I of the project will cover 65 km connecting Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) airport in the western boundary of the city to Narengi in the easternmost part
-
Phase-II will cover the stretch between Paltan Bazar and Khanapara area
-
Phase-III proposes to cover the stretch between Khanapara and Jalukbari area
The exact time schedule for completion of the project will be decided as soon as the detailed project report (DPR) is prepared.
Meanwhile, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority is also planning to set up at least two or three satellite townships. For the purpose, the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), has already identified an area of 80 sq km near Narengi and is looking for more suitable land on the western outskirts of the city around Palashbari and Chaygaon.
The authority has also evinced an interest to develop the river transport system by setting up a corporation, if necessary, to easy daily transportation in the city. For the purpose, the Urban Planning Institute in Ahmedabad was engaged to do a study on it.
