The government of India has inked a preliminary agreement with Bhutan to jointly develop four hydropower projects in Bhutan.
The four projects are: 600 MW Kholongchhu; 570 MW Wangchhu; 180 MW Bunakha; and 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I. Surplus power from these power projects will be exported to India.
Besides these, three other power projects in Bhutan which will supply electricity to India, are under construction and are expected to be commissioned by 2018. These power plants are: 1,200 MW Punatsangchu-I; 1,020 MW Punatsangchu-II; and the 720 MW Mangdehchu project.
Three other hydroelectric projects, with a total capacity of 1,416 MW, are already operational in Bhutan and are supplying electricity to India. These projects are: 336 MW Chukha project; 60 MW Kurichu project; and 1,020 MW Tala project.
