The Union Urban Development Ministry is planning to implement a metro rail project in the cities of Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, and Tenali in Andhra Pradesh (AP).
The Ministry is planning a metro project which will be a circuit transport system and will connect Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali cities.
The project is expected to be completed in three to four years and will cover a distance of 20 to 25 km.
Apart from this, the state government is exploring other means of mass transport like ‘mono rail’, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and tramways.
The feasibility report for the project will be prepared by the state government and on the basis of the report, financial assistance for the project will be granted by the Centre.
A corridor from Hanuman Junction to Kanchikacherla via Gannavaram, Vijayawada and Ibrahimpatnam can be developed.
On the other hand, the Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA) has expressed the need to develop a corridor from Pamarru to Vijayawada, covering a distance of 40 km; another corridor between Vijayawada and Edlapadu via Guntur covering a distance of 68 km; and a 100 km circular corridor connecting Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali.
