The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) is preparing an integrated plan for a fresh urban renewal scheme, which aims at developing 100 cities, including cities and towns along the river Ganges.
The new urban renewal scheme will replace the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), and is likely to entail an investment of Rs 1.75 lakh crore which will be spent over a period of ten years.
The new plan is being prepared in collaboration with the Tourism and Ganga rejuvenation ministries for developing cities like Agra, Varanasi and several others, into tourism circuits.
As per the new plan, the ministry aims to increase the amount to be spent on procuring intercity and feeder buses. It is learnt that the Centre is likely to provide funds to the state governments for procurement of 15,000 buses. Also, this time, the states will be given grants for the project on first-come-first-served basis.
Apart from this, the department will also include development of waterways, including grants for procuring boats and setting up of ropeways in hilly areas.
