Central Coalfields (CCL), a Coal India subsidiary, has commenced production at its 12 million tpa Amrapali coal mine, located in Chatra district of Jharkhand.
The company has started production at the mine with a view to increasing supply to fuel-starved power plants.
The company took almost ten years to commence mining at the Amrapali coal mine, which was facing delay due to hurdles in land acquisition and the absence of rail line to connect the mining project.
The Amrapali opencast coal mine has mineable reserves of 291 million tonne, and the coal produced from the mine will be evacuated through Tori-Shivpur railway line, which however, is yet to be completed.
The Amrapali mine is expected to produce three million tonne in FY15, during which Central Coalfields will increase production by 10 per cent i.e. to 55 million tonne.
Apart from this, the Power Ministry has requested the government of Jharkhand to help CCL get the requisite clearances from state / district authorities in matters relating to early completion of the crucial line and land authentication of villagers.
