Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed construction work of twin tunnels on the Delhi Metro Phase-III project. This is the first time in India that two parallel tunnels were completed simultaneously on any metro project.
The tunnels are at Dabri Mor on the Janakpuri West - Botanical Garden corridor of Delhi Metro Phase-III.
Two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) named 'Riddhi' and 'Siddhi' emerged at the Dabri Mor station after boring 1.2 km long twin tunnels. One of the TBMs started operations in December 2013, while the other TBM started work in January 2014.
The tunnels have been constructed at a depth of 16.5 mtr and the internal diameter of the tunnels is 5.8 mtr.
They are part of the 36 km long Janakpuri West-Botanical Garden (Noida) corridor of Phase-III, under which about 21 km of underground lines are being built. The corridor is expected to be operational in the year 2016.
As part of its third phase of expansion, DMRC is slated to construct about 53 km of underground lines, using about 35 TBMs.
Presently, about 28 TBMs are engaged in tunnelling work in different parts of the national capital. 14 TBMs were used for the construction of tunnels in Delhi Metro Phase-II.
