On 13 January 2014, Dr Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone for a 2,800 MW nuclear power plant at Gorakhpur village in Fatehabad district of Haryana.
The power project undertaken by Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL), will be developed at a cost of Rs 23,502 crore.
Around 1,500 acre of land was acquired for the project from villages Gorakhpur, Kajalheri and Badopal of Fatehabad district and Rs 450 crore has been paid as compensation to 847 families of these villages.
As per the draft of the proposed power plant, the project will be developed in various stages. The construction of the project will be taken up in two stages of 2 x 700 MW each. Stage-I of the project will be commissioned in 60 months from Zero date of January 2014, and consequently two units are likely to be developed after four years.
The main nuclear power plant units of the Rs 23,502 crore project will be developed on 608.5 ha including exclusion zone of one km around the reactor building.
NPCIL is also looking forward to making a ten ft high fencing all around the project.
