Kirloskar Brothers (KBL), in collaboration with Tata Power, has installed a water pumping system for the latter's Mundra UMPP (Ultra Modern Power Plant).
At the pumping station, 10 sets of concrete volute pumps circulate 0.5 million ltr of water every minute. The water pumping station has been constructed by the company on a turnkey basis. Cold water from the sea is pumped by water pumps through the condenser and goes back to the sea through an outfall structure.
The Mundra UMPP has been developed by the Coastal Gujarat Power (CGPL), Tata Power's wholly-owned subsidiary. The project, with 4,000 MW (5 x 800 MW) capacity requires an enormous amount of water to condense the heat generated in the production of power. The power plant uses super critical technology to create lower greenhouse gas emissions.
