Notices for land acquisition for the Navi Mumbai International Airport will be issued from today. The 226 acre core area is largely owned by villagers and is spread over eight villages.
The land acquisition will be carried out by the Raigad collector. As per Cidco, the promoter of the airport project, physical possession of the land is expected to be completed by September.
Once the land is acquired, the process of reclamation, hill-cutting and diversion of the Ulwe river will be undertaken in the core area.
Another challenge for the airport construction is shifting the high tension lines owned by Tata Power and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), work on which is underway.
The Navi Mumbai airport project has been stuck for years mainly due to land acquisition issues. The project cost has gone up from Rs 4,766 crore in 2006 to Rs 14,573 crore. With all requisite permissions in place, the international airport is proposed to be ready to operate by 2017.
