Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), is likely to complete the ongoing work for Lumding-Silchar-Jiribam GC railway line project by October 2015.
NFR will take up the one-and-half decade delayed project in October 2014. Recently, in July 2013, the project received environmental clearance from Project Monitoring Group (PMG).
The project, estimated to cost Rs 4,251 crore, involves the gauge conversion of the 214 km stretch between Lumding and Silchar in Assam. It includes alignment between Migrendisa and Ditokcherra with material modification for the extension of the 44 km Badarpur-Bairagram line. The line is to be extended to Jiribam in Tamenglong district of Manipur, near the Assam-Manipur border. It includes the construction of 20 new tunnels and repair of one tunnel. There will also be a tunnel in the broad gauge alignment, 88 major bridges and 292 minor bridges on the route.
