National Aluminium Company (Nalco) has plans to set up a 100 MW wind power plant. The total investment estimated for this project is Rs 650 crore.
The selection of a suitable location in India and wind power developer is underway. This plant will help to meet its solar purchase obligation.
It envisages setting up a 14 MW wind power project at Damanjodi. Further, it is trying to secure a coal block for this second smelter and power complex proposed in Sundargarh district.
Nalco has already commissioned two wind power plants; the 50.4 MW plant in Andhra Pradesh in the year 2012-13; and the Rajasthan unit of 47.6 MW, with an investment of Rs 283 crore in January 2014. In the year 2013-14, both these plants generated about 150 million units of electricity.
The company has registered a net profit of Rs 271 crore in the first quarter (April-June) of 2014-15, which is higher by 58 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.
