The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had invited RfQs for the 33.5 km metro line, estimated to cost Rs 23,136 crore, in September 2013. However, the last date for submission of bids was extended on five occasions and ultimately to 10 March, 2014. Following this, as many as 14 firms had submitted pre-qualification bids for construction of the underground metro rail.

The foundation stone for the Colaba-Seepz underground metro corridor was laid recently on 27 August, 2014.
