The Ministry of Power has proposed to set up a 2,000 MW solar power project in Punjab.
Out of 2,000 MW solar power generated in the state, 1,000 MW will be bought by NTPC.
The Punjab state government will also submit a detailed proposal for installing 100 MW solar panels on rooftops soon.
Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) and Power Finance Corporation (PFC) will also jointly fund a project for installing smart meters in the state, at a cost of Rs 400 crore, and the remaining Rs 100 crore will be borne by the state government.
Against a total demand of nearly 8,600 MW, Punjab’s installed power capacity is 6,200 MW, resulting in a shortfall of 2,500 MW. The three upcoming coal-based power projects at Rajpura, Talwandi Sabo and Goindwal Sahib are likely to take the state's total generation capacity to 13,600 MW.
