Reliance Jio Infocomm is planning to launch its 4G services commercially, in 2015.
For the purpose, the company has proposed to invest Rs 70,000 crore. It will launch the service in a phased manner.
The company holds pan-India broadband wireless access (BWA) spectrum, which it had acquired through auction, which can be used for 4G services. The service will cover all states, around 5,000 towns and cities, accounting for over 90 per cent of urban India and over 2,15,000 villages.
Reliance Jio Infocomm also acquired spectrum in 1,800 MHz band, widely known as 2G spectrum, for Rs 11,054.41 crore, in February 2014, across 14 out of 22 service areas in the country. The company has proposed to use these radiowaves also for 4G services.
As per the rules, 2015 is the last year for all companies which won BWA spectrum to roll out the services in at least 90 per cent of the service areas, failing which the Department of Telecom will have the right to withdraw the radiowaves.
