The shipping ministry has completed the set up of a monitoring unit for its Rs 4,200 crore Allahabad-Haldia Jal Marg Vikas project on Ganga.
This project is designed to develop the National Waterway-1 between Allahabad-Varanasi-Buxar-Patnand Haldia. It will cover a total distance of 1,620 km and is projected to be completed over a span of six years.
By 2020, Jal Marg Vikas project will enable commercial navigation of at least 1,500 tonne vessels to Allahabad around the year, as well as cruise tours connecting religious places.
At present, cruise ships can function between Kolkata and Varanasi for about eight months in a year.
