The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is likely to unveil a merger and acquisition policy for telecom companies by 15 October 2013.
For the purpose, the ministry plans to discuss the proposal with industry before releasing the final guidelines.
Meanwhile, the ministry intends to start Post Banks in rural areas. For this, the Department of Posts has applied for the approval of banking licence from Reserve Bank of India.
Apart from this, the ministry is also working on a policy framework for optical fibre network under which the government plans to connect 250,000 village panchayats in the country. It will also connect 600 universities and 3,500 colleges with dedicated national knowledge network. This process is underway and likely to be completed by 2014.
