The Rs 4,874 crore project will connect IT hub Sector V in Salt Lake to Howrah across the river Hooghly. This 14.58 km line will be constructed and maintained by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC). The Japan International Cooperation Association is funding the project with a long-term soft loan. The East-West Metro project will have 12 Metro stations, including one near the State Secretariat. In the Phase I, two tunnels for up and down lines will be dug from Subhas Sarobar to the existing Central station of the Kolkata Metro Railway and in the Phase II, a tunnel will be laid below the Hooghly up to Howrah. Two sophisticated boring machines brought from Germany will be used for tunneling. The project is expected to be completed by December 2014.
