Work on the Northeast Frontier Railway's (NFR's) Lumding-Silchar broad gauge project in Assam is going on as per schedule and 80 per cent is completed.
Work on the 200 mtr for tunnel No. 7 is yet to be completed, and work on 425 mtr for tunnel No. 10 in Dima Hasao district, in central Assam is also incomplete. The project has overcome all obstacles, including problems of militancy and shortage of funds, which had come in the way. The Ministry of Environment & Forests had also given the necessary clearance at the Barail Hill range for the broad gauge project.
The Lumding-Silchar broad gauge project will be completed after accomplishing two mega blocks -- Badarpur to Agartala, and the Karimganj-Mahishashan section.
The mega block from Badarpur to Agartala, a distance of 224 km, will be taken up in October 2015 and the block in the 10 km Karimganj-Mahishashan section will begin in October 2017. The mega blocks will continue for six months on each of the routes.
