The Central government is likely to
clear the Rs.14,600 crore Chennai metro rail project in the next two weeks.
The Japan International Cooperative
Agency will fund 60 per cent of the 46 km metro rail project cost, while the
central and state governments will contribute 20 per cent each.
The project has received clearance
from the Projects Implementation Board of the Centre.
About 20 km of the 46-km planned in
Phase I of the project will be underground while the remaining will be elevated
structures. The foundation stone for the metro will be laid in a months time.
The centre will also clear the Rs.900
crore Nemmeli water desalination project, which was proposed on 40 acre near
Mamallapuam in Kancheepuram district.
