Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M Karunanidhi will soon lay the foundation stone for
the Rs.14,600 crore Metro Rail Project aimed at easing the traffic congestion in
Chennai.
The project will be implemented through a public sector company - Chennai Metro
Rail. A tender for Phase I of the project, for construction of a viaduct from
Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar has been reportedly finalised.
The project will be jointly financed by the Centre, the State and Japan
International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Of the total allocation, Rs.11,680
crore will be the share of the State and Rs.2,920 crore will be Centre's
contribution. Of the State's share, Rs.8,646 crore will be received as loan from
JICA and Rs.3,034 crore will be met from the State's funds.
