The
Kerala government has drawn up plans to expand the Thiruvananthapuram
international airport and has already acquired 120 acres of land for the
purpose, according to Kerala chief minister, Mr A K Antony. The airport expansion would be implemented with private
sector participation.
The
state is also considering another airport at Kannur with 100 per cent private
participation. The Planning Commission has advised caution in setting up new
airports and expansion of the existing ones saying that too many airports
within the same state could hamper the viability of existing airports. At
present, Kerala has three international airports - at Kochi, Kozhikode and
Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, the chief minister also
pointed out that an Infrastructure Bill promoting private investment in the
state was under consideration of the state legislature. Further, the Law
Reforms Committee has given its first report containing new initiatives and
suggestions for repeal of 697 obsolete laws.
