On 27 February 2014, Gulam Nabi Azad, Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, inaugurated the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar in Orissa.
The 978-bed facility hospital is likely to be operational by the end of 2014. Land for the AIIMS facility in Orissa was allotted free of cost by the state government.
Besides, a satellite centre for AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, will be developed at Balasore after the Orissa government allots 25 acre for it.
Also, the Centre has already given the go-ahead for four medical colleges which will be established in Balasore, Balangir, Koraput and Baripada in Orissa under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Sahayata Yojana (PMSSY).
The four colleges will be set up with a total investment of about Rs 750 crore. For upgradation of two existing colleges at Berhampur and Burla, an outlay of Rs 300 crore will be required.
Apart from this, the Centre will soon set up a state level cancer treatment centre at Cuttack, at an estimated cost of Rs 120 crore, and two regional cancer treatment centres in the state, at an investment of Rs 90 crore.
