The government of Assam has launched a rural water supply and sanitation project for low income states (RWSSP-LIS) in seven districts of the state.
The project will cover 5,041 dwellings in 179 gram panchayats across Kamrup, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Sivasagar, Bongaigaon, and Morigaon districts.
The sanitation project will involve construction of household toilets, soak-pits, improvements in drain and lanes, community awareness programmes for better sanitation and hygiene practices, along with incentives for achieving 'open defecation-free' status.
The state government has earmarked an investment of Rs 1,474 crore for the project, which is backed by the World Bank. It has received an International Development Association (IDA) credit of Rs 737 crore.
