Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), a state-run company, has bagged a contract for setting up a 1,320 MW thermal power project in Tamil Nadu.
It is an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), valued at about Rs 7,800 crore. The contract states that BHEL will set up a 2x660 MW coal-fired thermal power project at Ennore Special Economic Zone in Tamil Nadu.
The scope of work includes design, engineering, construction, erection, supply, manufacture, testing and commissioning for the EPC package.
For this project, a specialised civil design is needed as it will be constructed on a reclaimed ash pond. The equipment for the contract will be manufactured at Bhel's Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Jhansi plants, while its power sector -- Southern Region -- will be responsible for civil works and erection or commissioning of the equipment.
