Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has commissioned the supercritical power generation unit at Barh, near Patna in Bihar.

On 30 November 2013, the project attained full load of 660 MW.

BHEL had secured its order for 660 MW sets with supercritical parameters from NTPC through international competitive bidding. The scope of work involved design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection and commissioning of two sets of 660 MW each, along with associated auxiliaries.

BHEL had manufactured key equipment for the project at its Haridwar, Tiruchi, Hyderabad and Bangalore plants, while construction of the plant was undertaken by the company's eastern region power sector unit at Kolkata, West Bengal.

Currently, the company is executing orders for supply and installation of 27 steam generators and 24 turbines with supercritical parameters of 660 MW, 700 MW and 800 MW ratings.

The entire Barh power project is being promoted by NTPC with an investment of Rs 8,693 crore. The coal-based power plant will be implemented in three units, each with 660 MW capacity.
