The Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) has sanctioned Rs 415 crore loan for the drinking water project in Berhampur city in south Odisha.
This loan amount will be utilised for the implementation of this project. HUDCO wants the state government to be the guarantor, as the interest rate is over 10 per cent. However, the loan amount will be released after the state government takes the final decision.
The Rs 415 crore scheme envisages drawing water from Janibili diversion wire, 47 km from here, through underground pipes; setting up of a water treatment plant of 75 MLD; and laying a 37 km pipeline to supply water to uncovered areas. This project is expected to solve the city problem as it will provide 200 MLD.
Presently, the city requirement is 52 MLD, but it gets 50 MLD from various sources like Dakhinapur reservoir and the Rushikulya water supply system.
The Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, laid the foundation stone of the project on 3 October last year. Recently, the CM reviewed the drinking water scheme along with other projects and emphasized on timely completion of the projects.
