The state government will go ahead with the Mekedatu drinking water project by constructing a reservoir at the site. However, the government has dropped its plan of constructing a hydel power plant at Mekedatu.
The reservoir will have a total water capacity of approx 50 TMC. Cauvery Neeravari Nigam (CNNL) has been appointed as the nodal agency for executing the drinking water project at Mekedatu, on the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border. Earlier, the government proposed to set up the reservoir, in addition to mini-hydel plant(s). The aim was to supply drinking water to Bengaluru along with surrounding areas, as well as to generate power.
As per the EOI, the selected global consultant will have to submit reports on 11 different aspects, including water availability, study of hydrology of the Cauvery basin, particularly at Mekedatu, study of the catchment areas, preparation of a comprehensive DPR and more. The cost of the project will be known in the DPR.
Once the reservoir work is completed, it will be the largest reservoir on the Karnataka side of the Cauvery basin.
