The Odisha government has decided to launch a mega drinking water project in Nuapada and Kalahandi districts. These two districts are most affected by fluoride contamination.
The project will require an investment of Rs 750 crore and is scheduled to be completed in two years. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has given its approval of financial assistance for the project under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) scheme.
In the first phase of the project, filters will be installed in tube wells in districts affected with excess fluoride content in the water. This work is projected be completed by March 2015.
Presently, people of 927 villages in the state are using drinking water with excess fluoride content. From these 927 villages, 118 are in Nuapada district while the remaining 739 villages are spread over 15 districts.
