Mizoram is set to mark a historic milestone as the Bairabi-Sairang rail line nears completion, officially connecting the state capital Aizawl to India’s national railway network for the first time.
Spanning 51.38 km, the project is designed to transform connectivity, reduce travel time, and create new opportunities for the people of Mizoram. Built through challenging terrain, the line features 48 tunnels with a total length exceeding 12 km and 142 bridges, both major and minor. Among them, Bridge No. 196 stands at 104 metres, taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar, making it the second-highest pier bridge in Indian Railways. The project also integrates five road overbridges and six underpasses for seamless transport.
With 95 per cent of physical work completed and 97 percent of funds utilised, the Northeast Frontier Railway conducted a successful trial run in May 2025, followed by safety inspections in June. Cleared by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, passenger trains will run at speeds up to 90 kmph.
