The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), has given environmental clearance to NTPC's capacity augmentation of 500 MW (Stage IV) coal-based thermal power plant at Feroz Gandhi Unchahar thermal power station at Raebareli district, in Uttar Pradesh.
Clearance has been given under the provisions of EIA. With this clearance, the ministry has also stipulated the following provision to be adhered to by the company for implementing the project:-
-
It desired, soil salination due to seepage from canal around Umram ash pond shall be addressed based on the findings made by IIT, Kharagpur.
-
Continuous monitoring for ground water quality around the ash pond shall be undertaken
The EC was further subject to obtaining clearance from the Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The thermal stalwart had earlier contended that since the capacity augmentation of 500 MW to the existing 1,050 MW did not entail additional usage of land, the project should not fall under fresh scrutiny by the environment authorities.
