With construction work on the Carnac bridge near Masjid Bunder station completed on 10 June, 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is awaiting clearance from the Railways to open the bridge to motorists. The bridge plays a crucial role in connecting south Mumbai with the eastern suburbs, facilitating access to the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, which links to Navi Mumbai.
Originally built in 1866–67, the over 150-year-old bridge was closed to heavy vehicles in August 2014 due to structural deterioration and was demolished in November 2022 after a post-pandemic structural audit declared it unsafe. Reconstruction began immediately, and the project is now near completion. BMC Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar provided updates on other key infrastructure works. The Bellasis flyover is set for completion by 15 December, 2025, while the Sion flyover is expected to be ready by 31 May, 2026. Delays due to the arrival of railway girders have been resolved, with installation to finish by August 10.
Further construction of approach roads and supporting infrastructure, including foot overbridges and road connectivity to Dharavi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road, is underway and targeted for completion by March 2026.
