The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has initiated the process to develop a 25-year Water Masterplan for Lutyens’ Delhi, aiming to modernise its aging water supply infrastructure and ensure long-term sustainability. Tenders to appoint a consultant for the comprehensive study were floated on June 20, with the selection process expected to conclude by July 15, officials confirmed.
NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Chahal said, “The new masterplan will focus on upgrading the water supply system and expanding the 24x7 water supply model,” which is currently being piloted near Vinay Marg and Moti Bagh. The Masterplan will address water sustainability, leakage prevention, supply line upgrades, and a smart metre network connected to a central SCADA system. NDMC supplies water across 450 km of pipeline to around 15,970 residential and 3,157 commercial users.
The civic body recently approved a Rs 31 crore project to replace 5,397 defective mechanical water metres with advanced smart metres. Serving a resident population of 0.25 million and a floating population of up to 2 million, the area faces complex challenges due to its historical infrastructure. Although NDMC sources raw water from the Delhi Jal Board, it functions as an independent utility for the zone.
