NTPC has received 96 acre land from the government of West Bengal for its Katwa coal-based power project at Srikhanda village in Bardhaman district.
Of the total allotted land, 38 acre is a mix of vested land; 31 acre is agriculture land; and the rest belongs to the Panchayat and Irrigation department. Along with this, the state government is also planning to divert excess coal from West Bengal Power Development Corporation to the project till such time that production begins at the recently allotted Deocha Achine block in Birbhum.
The 1,320 MW (2 x 660 MW) power plant will come up over 557 acre of land with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore. The project has been stuck for almost three years due to problems with land acquisition.
Further, the company will soon buy 150 acre directly from the landowners at an agreed price, without the government's help.
NTPC intends to commence work on the project within six months.
