ONGC on 9 April 2013 signed an MoU with KK Birla Group company, Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals.
ONGC signed an MoU for setting up a fertiliser unit in Unakoti district of Tripura. The facility which will produce 1.3 million tpa of fertiliser is expected to cost Rs 5,000 crore. ONGC will distribute natural gas which will be utlised as raw material for producing urea in the proposed facility. The Government of Tripura has also decided to provide land and other logistic supports. Khobal Fertiliser Company which will execute the project is a 50:50 JV company. The company’s share can be also reshuffled if any new partner company is interested in acquiring stake in it.
The company is exploring possibility of transporting the product through Bangladesh by using their ports and waterways which will reduce the transportation cost. There is also a possibility of marketing the fertiliser in Bangladesh, Odisha and West Bengal.
Work on the project is expected to be commissioned by 2016.
