Posco India is expecting to soon get revalidation of its environmental clearance for its integrated steel plant at Paradip in Jagatsingpur district of Orissa.
In 2013, in order to adjust to the opposition over land acquisition in the coastal district of Jagatsinghpur, the company had resized its plans to a smaller plant of eight million tonne. The proposed project is estimated to cost Rs 12,000 crore.
However, work on land acquisition was halted in May 2013 when the National Green Tribunal (NGT), a fast-track court for environmental issues, ordered a status quo until approval was received from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).
With this revalidation nod from the NGT that Posco is hopeful of getting, the cutting of trees at the site can resume. The company has already commenced work to build a boundary wall over the area.
